Final Grade Calculator
What score do you need on your final exam to achieve your desired course grade?
How the Final Grade Calculator Works
The Final Grade Calculator helps you determine what score you need on your final exam to achieve a target grade for your course. It considers your current grade, how much the final exam is worth, and your desired final grade.
The Formula
Required Exam Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Exam Weight)) / Exam Weight
Where exam weight is expressed as a decimal (e.g., 30% = 0.30).
Worked Example
Scenario
James currently has 78% in his course. His final exam is worth 30% of his grade. He wants to finish with 85% (a B). What does he need on the final?
Calculation:
- Current work weight: 100% − 30% = 70%
- Required = (85 − 78 × 0.70) / 0.30
- Required = (85 − 54.6) / 0.30
- Required = 30.4 / 0.30
- Required = 101.3%
James needs 101.3% on his final exam, which is impossible. Even scoring 100% would give him a final grade of only 78 × 0.70 + 100 × 0.30 = 84.6%. He may need to adjust his target grade or seek extra credit opportunities.
Interpreting Your Results
- Required score ≤ 100% and achievable: You have a realistic target. Aim for this score or higher to reach your goal.
- Required score < current grade: The exam could actually help pull your grade down — you have room to still meet your target even with a lower exam score.
- “Already achieved” message: You’ve already secured your target grade regardless of the final exam. Congratulations!
- “Impossible” message: Even a perfect score on the final won’t get you to your target. Consider adjusting your goal.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my final exam is worth more than 100%?
If your exam weight exceeds 100%, recheck your course syllabus. Exam weights are typically between 15% and 50% of the total grade. Some courses may have a final worth up to 60%.
Can I use this for a midterm instead of a final?
Absolutely. Just enter the weight of the midterm (or any other assessment) as the exam weight, and the calculator will tell you what score you need on that specific assessment.
What does “current grade” mean?
Your current grade is your weighted average of all completed work before the final exam. If you’ve received grades for quizzes, assignments, and a midterm, your current grade should reflect all of those combined.
