Required Exam Score Calculator

What score do you need to reach your target grade? Includes a what-if table showing final grades at different exam scores.

How the Required Exam Score Calculator Works

This calculator tells you the exact score you need on a specific exam or assessment to reach your target overall grade. Unlike the Final Grade Calculator, it also shows a what-if table so you can see how different exam scores would affect your final grade.

The Formula

Required Exam Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Exam Weight)) / Exam Weight

Final Grade at Score X = Current Grade × (1 − Weight) + X × Weight

Worked Example

Scenario

David has 82% in his course. The final exam is worth 40% of his grade. He wants to finish with 90% (A).

Calculation:

  • Current weight: 100% − 40% = 60%
  • Required = (90 − 82 × 0.60) / 0.40
  • Required = (90 − 49.2) / 0.40
  • Required = 40.8 / 0.40
  • Required = 102%

David needs 102%, which is impossible. The what-if table shows that even 100% on the final gives him only 82 × 0.60 + 100 × 0.40 = 89.2% (a B). He might need to adjust his target to 89% or seek extra credit.
