Grade Calculator
Calculate your overall grade from multiple assignments, tests, and exams. Supports weighted and unweighted averages.
How the Grade Calculator Works
The Grade Calculator takes the scores from your assignments, tests, and exams and calculates your overall grade. If you provide weights, it computes a weighted average where assessments with higher weights contribute more to your final grade. If no weights are given, it calculates a simple average where each assessment counts equally.
The Formula
Weighted Average: Overall = (Score1 × Weight1 + Score2 × Weight2 + … ) / (Weight1 + Weight2 + …)
Simple Average: Overall = (Score1 + Score2 + … ) / Number of Assessments
Worked Example
Scenario
Sarah has three assessments in her course. She scored 85% on Homework (weighted 20%), 78% on the Midterm (weighted 30%), and 92% on the Final Exam (weighted 50%).
Calculation:
- Homework: 85 × 0.20 = 17.0
- Midterm: 78 × 0.30 = 23.4
- Final: 92 × 0.50 = 46.0
Overall: (17.0 + 23.4 + 46.0) / (20 + 30 + 50) = 86.4 / 100 = 86.4% which is a B (80–89 range).
Interpreting Your Results
- A (90–100): Excellent. Outstanding performance.
- B (80–89): Above average. Good performance.
- C (70–79): Satisfactory. Meets standard expectations.
- D (60–69): Below average. May require improvement.
- F (0–59): Failing. Does not meet minimum standards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use weighted or unweighted?
Use weighted if your course syllabus specifies different weights for different assessment types (e.g., Homework 20%, Midterm 30%, Final 50%). Use unweighted if all assessments count equally toward your final grade.
What if my weights don\u2019t add up to 100%?
The calculator will still work. It normalises the total weight automatically. For example, if weights total 80%, each weight is proportionally correct. However, check your syllabus to ensure you haven\u2019t missed any assessment categories.
Can I include extra credit?
Yes. Enter scores above 100% for extra credit assignments. The calculator will include them in the average as-is.
