GPA Calculator

Calculate your semester GPA on a standard 4.0 unweighted scale. Add your courses with letter grades and credit hours.

How the GPA Calculator Works

This GPA calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale. Each letter grade (with plus/minus modifiers) is assigned a point value. Your GPA is calculated by multiplying each course’s grade points by its credit hours, summing these values, and dividing by the total credit hours.

Grade to Points Mapping

A+4.0B3.0C-1.7
A4.0B-2.7D+1.3
A-3.7C+2.3D1.0

F = 0.0 points

Worked Example

Scenario

Maria takes three courses this semester: Biology (A, 4 credits), History (B+, 3 credits), and Mathematics (B, 4 credits).

Calculation:

 • Biology: 4.0 × 4 = 16.0
 • History: 3.3 × 3 = 9.9
 • Mathematics: 3.0 × 4 = 12.0
 • Total points: 16.0 + 9.9 + 12.0 = 37.9
 • Total credits: 4 + 3 + 4 = 11
 • GPA: 37.9 / 11 = 3.45

Interpreting Your Results

 • 3.7–4.0: Excellent (A/A+ average)
 • 3.3–3.69: Good (B+/A- average)
 • 3.0–3.29: Satisfactory (B average)
 • 2.0–2.99: Passing, but needs improvement
 • Below 2.0: Academic probation in many institutions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is A+ worth more than A on a 4.0 scale?

On most standard unweighted 4.0 scales, A+ and A both equal 4.0. Some schools use a 4.33 scale where A+ = 4.33, but this is less common. Check your institution’s specific grading policy.

What about plus/minus grades?

This calculator includes plus/minus modifiers (A-, B+, B-, etc.) with their standard point values as commonly used in US institutions. If your school doesn’t use plus/minus grading, set all relevant grades to the base letter grade.

Can I use this for a weighted GPA (honors/AP)?

No. This calculator uses an unweighted scale. Weighted GPAs assign extra points for advanced courses (e.g., AP = 5.0). Use the Cumulative GPA Calculator if you need to combine GPAs across semesters.
