How the Cumulative GPA Calculator Works

Your cumulative GPA combines all your coursework across semesters. This calculator takes your existing GPA and completed credits, then adds your new semester’s courses to calculate your overall cumulative GPA and the GPA for your new semester separately.

The Formula

Cumulative GPA = (Existing GPA × Existing Credits + New Grade Points) / (Existing Credits + New Credits)

New Semester GPA = New Grade Points / New Credits

Where new grade points are calculated by summing (grade points × credits) for each new course.

Worked Example

Scenario

Sarah has a 3.2 GPA after completing 30 credits. This semester, she takes two courses: Biology (B, 3 credits) and Chemistry (A-, 4 credits).

Calculation:

 • Existing total points: 3.2 × 30 = 96.0
 • Biology: 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
 • Chemistry: 3.7 × 4 = 14.8
 • New total: 9.0 + 14.8 = 23.8 points (7 credits)
 • New semester GPA: 23.8 / 7 = 3.40
 • Cumulative GPA: (96.0 + 23.8) / (30 + 7) = 119.8 / 37 = 3.24

Interpreting Your Results

The calculator shows both your new semester GPA and your overall cumulative GPA. If your new semester GPA is higher than your existing GPA, your cumulative GPA will increase; if lower, it will decrease. The more credits you’ve already completed, the harder it is to significantly change your cumulative GPA with one semester.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my cumulative GPA change much?

If you’ve completed many credits already, a single semester has less impact on your cumulative GPA. For example, a 4.0 semester with 15 credits will raise a 3.0 GPA more if you’ve completed 30 credits than if you’ve completed 90 credits.

Can I use this for transfer credits?

Yes. Enter the GPA from your previous institution as the existing GPA and the number of transfer credits accepted. Add your new courses from your current institution.

What if I’m just starting (0 existing credits)?

Enter 0 for existing credits and your cumulative GPA will equal your new semester GPA.
