ZIMSEC A-Level Points Calculator
Calculate your A-Level points for university applications using the standard ZIMSEC points conversion system.
How the ZIMSEC A-Level Points Calculator Works
ZIMSEC (Zimbabwe School Examinations Council) A-Level results are converted into points for university admissions. The standard points system assigns values to each grade: A = 5 points, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1, and U (Ungraded) = 0 points.
Most universities in Zimbabwe consider your best 3 subjects, though some programmes may use 2 or 4 subjects depending on the course requirements. The calculator sums your points and calculates an average to give you a clear picture of your academic standing.
The Formula
Total Points = Points(Subject 1) + Points(Subject 2) + … + Points(Subject N)
Average Points = Total Points / Number of Subjects
Where: A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1, U = 0
Worked Example
Scenario
Tendai takes three A-Level subjects: Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry. He achieves A in Mathematics, B in Biology, and C in Chemistry.
Points breakdown:
- Mathematics (A) = 5 points
- Biology (B) = 4 points
- Chemistry (C) = 3 points
Total Points: 5 + 4 + 3 = 12 points
Average: 12 / 3 = 4.0 points
Interpreting Your Results
- 15 points (3 As) — Exceptional. Competitive for the most selective programmes.
- 12–14 points — Strong. Suitable for most degree programmes.
- 9–11 points — Good. Meets requirements for many programmes.
- 6–8 points — Satisfactory. May qualify for foundation or bridging programmes.
- Below 6 points — Consider retaking subjects or exploring alternative pathways.
Remember that different universities and programmes have different entry requirements. Some courses like Medicine, Law, and Engineering typically require higher points.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which subjects count towards university points?
Most universities count your best 3 A-Level subjects. Some may consider 2 subjects or require specific subjects for certain programmes (e.g., Medicine requires Chemistry and Biology). Always check the specific entry requirements of your target institution.
Is the points system the same at all Zimbabwean universities?
Most universities in Zimbabwe use the standard 5-point system (A=5, B=4, etc.), but some may use their own weighting or have different requirements. The University of Zimbabwe, NUST, MSU, and others broadly follow this system, but always verify with your chosen institution.
Does a U grade give any points?
No. A U (Ungraded) result earns 0 points and is generally not considered a pass. U grades are not counted for university admission purposes.
Can I include AS Level results?
This calculator is designed for A-Level results only. AS Levels are typically not included in the A-Level points calculation, though some universities may consider them separately.
What if I took more than 4 subjects?
Universities typically count your best 3 subjects. You can use this calculator with your strongest 3 or 4 subjects to get your most competitive point score.
